The Norfolk Terrier is the smallest of the working terriers — a compact, sturdy, and fearlessly bold little dog from East Anglia in England, developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a ratter and fox bolter for use in the dense hedgerows and warrens of the English countryside. The Norfolk Terrier and the Norwich Terrier were considered the same breed until 1964, when the Kennel Club in the UK separated them based on a single defining characteristic: the Norfolk Terrier has drop ears that fold forward close to the cheek, while the Norwich Terrier has upright, prick ears. Both breeds share the same wiry, weather-resistant coat in shades of red, wheaten, black and tan, or grizzle, and the same fearless, affectionate, and sociable temperament. The Norfolk Terrier is notably more gregarious than many terrier breeds — it was bred to work in packs alongside other dogs, which gives it an unusually cooperative and friendly disposition for a terrier. Despite weighing just 11 to 12 pounds, the Norfolk Terrier has the heart and tenacity of a much larger working dog.
